My paintings are highly textured and often almost sculptural. I apply paint thickly and sometimes incorporate natural materials—pebbles, pyrite chips, and straw—so that the surface carries something of the land itself.

Roads appear again in this work. They are not simply routes through a landscape, but symbols of psychological and personal journeys. Through color, texture, and composition, I invite the viewer to travel across difficult or uncertain terrain toward a destination that remains partly mysterious. The changing atmosphere of the seasons, the cold wildness of winter, or the warmth of autumn and spring—helps give each journey its emotional character.

I am also drawn to rugged, scrubby trees, the kind that are easily overlooked. Their endurance and resilience move me, and they have become important presences in the paintings.

Ultimately, these landscapes are both physical and metaphorical. The roads reflect my own passage through life, moving across rough ground toward the openness of the sea. I hope the work offers viewers a place to consider their own journeys, their resilience, and their connection to the living world.

Warmly,

Mimi Cernyar Fox
