The icon: “ Witness” is a contemporary icon in that the historic Jesus is seen as the heart of the painting surrounded and in the midst of ordinary people. He is painted as the source of light and illumination because He is for all humanity, for all time.
His message of love is at the heart of His teaching, love of God and love of neighbor, and is the spirit of this painting.
A prayerful drama unfolds in this subject of light, vivid color and symbolic imagery.
Here common people in their desperateness and loneliness are united in hope and trust.
The candle flame reveals the temperament of the people. Faces that have been through trials in life, their ever changing and flickering emotions are visible. The American Flags reinforce that these people belong to the present.
Often referred to as The Good Shepard, I used the colors of spring and of life to represent Jesus Christ today.
In the background the trees allude to the cross of Jesus. In the center of the painting I have included the cup of blood. In biblical doctrine the blood of Jesus was shed for our forgiveness, for all humanity, for all time, so that in our death Jesus can raise us to a real and and eternal life.
All of the imagery is characteristic of my own beliefs; God loves us all. Convictions are from personnel experiences and years of spiritual research for the meaning of life.
After graduate school at WSU. I enrolled in the graduate program at a Benedictine Seminary where I studied with the Benedictine Priests of St. Benedict Oregon, and the Benedictine Sisters of Mt. Angel Oregon. There I continued my search through the study of Theology and Philosophy.
These studies wonderfully impacted me, helped me to recover from a very difficult childhood and prepare me for my purpose in life.
When I was a child we sometime would march in the summer evenings with our community and families in procession. United with lighted cups of candles we prayed for peace. This left an unforgettable image in my memory.
The work of creating this painting taught me humility and patience, and it brought me joy. I am motivated by the images I see on T.V. and social media of violent protests and vicious attacks on our fellow Americans which continue in our big cities today. With this painting I hope to share a bit of faith and peace, to convey that in-spite of the darkness of the world “The Light” is with us.
